Spanish elite runner sacrifices outcome to help Kenyan runner


In a heartwarming show of sportsmanship on the 2023 Generali Málaga Marathon in Spain on Sunday, Ricardo Rosado of Madrid, poised to turn out to be the primary Spanish finisher, sacrificed a top-five end to help his competitor, Evans Kimtai Kiprono of Kenya, in crossing the end line.

As Rosado approached the ultimate few metres, he shunned overtaking Kiprono, who was combating bodily exhaustion and making an attempt to remain on his ft. As an alternative, Rosado assisted Kiprono, slowing his tempo and grabbing his rival by the waist. Rosado accompanied Kiprono by way of the final steps, making certain he accomplished the marathon forward of him, in fifth place. Rosado completed sixth.

Whereas Rosado was awarded €1,000 for being the highest Spanish finisher in 2:14:23, he sacrificed an extra €500 for fifth place to help Kiprono. In an interview with Málaga Hoy, Rosado had no hesitation, stating, “The marathon is an expertise, and he has been higher than me all through the day, so I assumed he deserved to be fifth on the end line. You establish together with your rival; I’d do it once more.”

Race officers counseled Rosado’s gesture. Javier Aguirre de Cárcer, Generali’s director of communication, mentioned, “The gesture by Rosado simply metres from the end line to assist a Kenyan athlete demonstrates the solidarity and values that make this sport nice and with which we really feel recognized.”

In response to El Mundo, Kiprono was instantly escorted to the hospital after ending the race in 2:14:22, as a result of dehydration.

The race organizers acknowledged Rosado’s sportsmanship by awarding him the €500 comparable to fifth place, though he completed sixth. This was along with the €1,000 that he received for being the highest Spanish finisher.
